The Edward Hyde Show: 12 : The broken furlong

"Sometimes I get to feelin’, I was back in the old days - long ago
When we were kids when we were young, things seemed so perfect - you know
The days were endless we were crazy we were young,
The sun was always shinin’ - we just lived for fun
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don’t know,
The rest of my life’s been just a show."

Episode 12 : The broken furlong

The road that leads to my office is one of the busiest ones in that area. Buses, trucks, motorbikes, vans, you name it and it will be there somewhere, waiting for the mess to clear up.

If you love rollercoaster rides, you might like the first 200 metres of the road that connect Mogappair to the Estate. But you have to travel in a bus to get the feeling.

Granted, it does not feel like an actual rollercoaster. Suppose you moved in slow motion?

The bus, slipping to the first gear, takes the first pothole slowly. Easing into the ditch, it clambers out easily. Like the case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand does, the front wheels do not know how the rear wheels will cope. Instead of easing into the ditch, the rear wheels take the plunge.

And the passengers sitting at the rear end go Whee!

Here we go down a pothole in the road
A pothole in the road, a pothole in the road
Here we go down a pothole in the road
Every weekday morning.

The first is negotiated. The passengers want more. And the furlong obliges. This time, the bus swerves to the left. And to the right almost immediately.

Whee!

Now for the final one. Here we go...

Down she goes! And a moment later Upsy-daisy.

If you did the same thing on a normal rollercoaster, you would have plunged down from unimaginable heights only to climb again.

End of the broken furlong. End of the ride.

Want to do it again? Take a bus going out of the Estate.
