The Edward Hyde Show: 7 : The curse

"Sometimes I get to feelin’, I was back in the old days - long ago
When we were kids when we were young, things seemed so perfect - you know
The days were endless we were crazy we were young,
The sun was always shinin’ - we just lived for fun
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don’t know,
The rest of my life’s been just a show."

Episode 7 : The curse

All of us, at one point or the other, feel we are cursed. Accompanied by a firm conviction that it is true.

Life after the surgery took a little getting used to. An all-liquid diet consisting of sweet lime or grape juice with the odd cup of porridge thrown in for good measure.

One week went by.

I first stepped out of home to complete some formalities at the hospital. Walking through the market, I noticed odours and sights that had escaped my senses before.

The chaatwala stirring his big pot of bhel. The road-side vendor selling a plate of chicken biryani for twenty rupees. Mutton hanging in butcher stalls. The smell of hot sambhar wafting out of the vegetarian mess.

That was when I felt something dampen the top of my shirt.

I was drooling without realising it.

It is a curse, I tell you. When you are able to walk, move your hands, sense your nostrils and tongue working. But not your mouth.

Instead you are painfully made aware of a set of jaws held together by a metal brace that will stay for at least three weeks.

I am not foodie, but I miss eating. More than eating, I miss the action of biting and chewing. The feeling of biting into soft bread, crunching down on chips, gnawing on a chicken leg.

Three weeks of no ice-creams, no pizzas, no burgers, no bhel puri, no papdi chaat, no biryani. No chicken lollipops, no potato chips, no sandwiches.

I am salivating.

The only thing I can do is swallow. As I keep adding to a list of things I will eat when I am freed from this pair of metal cuffs.

It is going to be one hell of an orgy.

um yes, i know i was with braces for a couple of years
    no chewing gum
    no uncut fruit
    no uncooked carrot
    no eclairs
    no choclate
    and becoz of tonsils
    no pickle
    no tomato or other sauces
    no ice cream

so once in a while i had these things but mostly i was off them. after a point, and this is surprising, you really dont want them. your mind after running after all the food says - f!@## it - i dont even WANT it!

    and then you get it...

You are right. A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. And I wanted to know what that "any other name" was. :-)

You know my name is Hyde. It is only fair that I know in return what name you are hiding behind. :-))

    Hi Hyde,

Sorry to hear about your surgery. Glad you're recovering. Sometime back, I had hurt my little finger really badly. It was bleeding, and since I usually enjoy monstrously good health, it was a shocker. Just the idea that I couldn't change the rings on my little finger had me down. I forget what got me started. Sigh!

By the way, can you have soup? Very think potato soup with mushrooms, chilli flakes, and a little butter is really yum. Try it. Or blackcurrant iced tea. Or even...okay, yes, I'm a glutton.

    Get well soon!

My daily menu consists of the following-
    1. Porridge in the morning.
    2. Sweet lime juice and a cup of beaten curds in the afternoon.
    3. A cup of Boost and/or tea in the evening.
    4. Banana milkshake which also has my rather bitter pills crushed and mixed with it.

Soups have to be clear, otherwise the things get stuck between the brace and the teeth.

Orange? (adjusts glasses) It is a lighter shade of brown. But this template is not a permanent feature.

I see there have been developments in the blogging front that you chose to keep away from me. Perhaps I should have done the same? :-)
