The Edward Hyde Show: 147 : Hyde in America, Part IV

"Sometimes I get to feelin’, I was back in the old days - long ago
When we were kids when we were young, things seemed so perfect - you know
The days were endless we were crazy we were young,
The sun was always shinin’ - we just lived for fun
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don’t know,
The rest of my life’s been just a show."

--Freddie Mercury, These are the days of our lives.

Episode 147 : Hyde in America, Part IV

Go west... Life is peaceful there
Go west... In the open air
Go west... Where the skies are blue
Go west... This is what we're gonna do

To sunny California. After facing cold weather in Massachusetts, the warm weather in California came as a disappointment. It distracted me so much that I got lost in the small Sacramento airport.

I thought of hiring a car, perhaps a Volkswagen Beetle. Then I remembered how I almost screamed at my project lead, Vic, for driving down the "wrong" side of the road. I might end up doing that here!

However, I think I have a solution. If I walk down the right side of the pavements, paths, walkways and aisles I might be able to condition my mind. Then maybe I can hire a car, so that I will have something to do after work and not spend ten minutes in a cab talking to a Sardar who has forgotten so much Punjabi that on hearing me speak in Hindi he asked if I knew Punjabi as well!

In three days time I will know if I am mentally equipped to drive down the "wrong" side of the road.

heh..having read this, I'd say don't even try for a while. Till then, try and sell the idea of a road trip to a friend/colleague who can be convinced to drive you instead. :)

My friends are in southern California and I am in the northern part of the state. Don't know any colleagues here and I see quite a few "friendly" cops on the road... perhaps it is time I introduce myself to them.

why not hire a HD instead?
But i have heard you need a special license for that.
    Is that true?

Hm, planning to "introduce yourself to friendly cops"? Hey, okay! so you're falling in love with the country. But aren't there any saner ways to prolong your stay in America, than getting your "prospective" friends to extend a "state invitation" to you?!

    P.S.
    Hyde's friends in southern California:
Knock some sense into his head. By default, you guys are currently the closest in terms of geographical proximity to execute that knock on the head.

Hey hey, wait a minute. I didn't say I am falling in love with this country. If I did, I would be looking at ways to stay here on a more permanent basis.

Something I am not looking at now, because, according to the rules of the company, I cannot. :-P

As for my friends in southern California, how many of them know about this blog...?

IF, I don't know about the rules in this country. All I am going to do is call the car-rental company and bring them up-to-date with the situation and see what can be done.

Your friends don't know about this blog? There, you axed your chances of your friends reading & planning a surprise road-trip treat for you. :/

Now it hangs on the slender threads of car-rental rules. *fingers crossed*

Keep us posted on how it goes.

I am more worried about getting lost in this country. Imagine crossing the border and never knowing it.

    Caramba!

heh..then staying up north is a better idea. :)

But you worried about getting lost, after all those long road trips you ride away on at the first given opportunity?

In India, it is easy to stop somewhere and ask for directions. Besides, I keep a map handy. Things are a little different here. :-)
